Het Orkest — Norbert de Jong, 2023, acrylic 50x60cm

What is mixed media art?

Mixed media art is a technique in which the artist combines multiple materials and techniques within a single work. Think of a combination of oil paint and acrylic with collage elements, newspaper clippings, texture paste or three-dimensional objects. The result is a work with depth — literally and figuratively. Norbert de Jong is a master of working with mixed media and has made this technique his personal hallmark over decades of practice.

The mixed media works of Norbert de Jong

In the mixed media works of Norbert de Jong, his two great passions come together: expressive figuration and experimentation with materials. Each work begins with a sketch or a feeling — a movement, a figure, an emotion — and grows from there into a layered whole. Paint, texture and collage alternate freely. No work is fully planned in advance.

Technique and materials

Norbert de Jong works on canvas, board and paper. The materials vary per work: acrylic paint, oil paint, texture paste, gesso, collage elements and sometimes found objects. The works are characterised by rich surface structures that invite you to come closer.
